The Valmeyer Fire Department was founded in 1938, after a huge fire destroyed a large general store and several surrounding homes. Servicing the community are approximately 25 volunteer fire fighters and first responders.

Firefighters receive training and educational classes through SWIC and at the weekly (Mondays) drills conducted typically at the fire house. The services they respond to are structure/brush fires, rope rescues, car extrications, and medical calls.

The department consists of volunteer fire fighters and first responders but is funded through local taxes and grants to help maintain trucks, equipment, and fire gear and to provide training and new/continual education to the volunteers.
